Our school is named after Robert Owen. Robert Owen was born in Newtown, Wales, in 1771, and he spent his early life in the town before becoming a successful mill manager and one of the most influential social reformers of the early 19th century.
Known for his belief that people thrive when they are cared for, educated, and treated with dignity, Owen introduced pioneering improvements to living and working conditions in the communities he led, especially at the New Lanark mills.
His values of kindness, equality, community and opportunity for all closely reflect the ethos of Ysgol Robert Owen, where we commit to nurturing every learner, valuing their individuality, and creating a supportive environment in which they can flourish just as Owen believed every person should.

Our School Council
We believe the learners’ voices are key to ensuring our school meets the needs of our learners. We have an active School Council with representatives from all classes, and we meet half termly and feedback to the school leadership and board of governors.
Our school council aims to develop our learners confidence and ethical citizenship, and ensures they have a say in their own futures.

The governing body at Ysgol Robert Owen plays a vital role in shaping the strategic direction of the school and ensuring that every learner receives the highest quality education and support. Governors work closely with the Headteacher and staff to monitor the school’s performance, uphold its vision and values, and make sure resources are used effectively to meet the needs of all learners.
They provide challenge, guidance, and oversight while championing the wellbeing, inclusion, and achievements of every child. Through their commitment and partnership with the school community, the governing body helps ensure that Ysgol Robert Owen continues to grow as a place where learners thrive.

Friends of Ysgol Robert Owen
The Friends of Ysgol Robert Owen is a dedicated group that plays an important role in strengthening our school community. Working in partnership with staff and families, they help to enrich school life by organising events, fundraising for additional resources, and creating opportunities for parents and carers to connect and feel part of the school. Their support enables us to provide experiences and enhancements that go beyond the everyday curriculum, directly benefiting our learners and celebrating the spirit of belonging that defines Ysgol Robert Owen. We are deeply grateful for their commitment, energy, and continued contribution to the life of our school.
Cedewain Community Cafe
Cedewain Community Café is a welcoming, inclusive space at the heart of our school and local community. Attached to Ysgol Robert Owen, the café serves as both a community hub and a vibrant learning environment where our learners can gain meaningful, real life work experience. Here, learners have opportunities to develop practical skills such as food preparation, customer service, money handling, and teamwork, all within a supportive setting.
By working alongside staff and engaging with members of the public, learners build communication and social skills while contributing to a space that brings people together. Cedewain Community Café reflects our school’s vision of empowering every learner, every day—offering authentic experiences that foster belonging, purpose, and possibility for all.
Our School Building
The school opened in September 2024 in a purpose-built, £22 million facility, funded by the Welsh Government and Powys County Council under the Transforming Education Programme. The school boasts state-of-the-art facilities designed for holistic development:
